Flexible Stone (soft ceramic panels) has become a popular choice for both interior and exterior wall applications due to its lightweight, durable, and decorative properties. Proper installation is critical to ensure long-term performance, prevent surface issues, and achieve a visually appealing finish. Below are the core principles every installer should follow.

1. Ensure a Solid, Flat, and Dry Substrate

The foundation is the most critical factor for a successful installation:

  • Solid: The substrate must be stable and strong to support the panels’ weight.

  • Flat: Uneven surfaces can cause panels to warp or create hollow spots. Use cement mortar or leveling compounds to correct irregularities.

  • Dry: Excess moisture can compromise adhesive bonding and cause discoloration or panel lifting.

Tip: Always check the substrate for dust, grease, or debris and clean it thoroughly before proceeding.

2. Pre-Arrange Panels

Before applying adhesive, lay out the Flexible Stone panels according to the desired design.

  • Pre-arranging panels helps identify color variations, patterns, or panel orientation issues.

  • It also allows installers to plan cuts, gaps, and alignment in advance, minimizing errors during installation.

3. Prepare the Panel Back – Flatten the Mesh

A unique but critical step often overlooked is flattening the fiberglass mesh on the back of the panel edges:

  • Use a small blade or trowel to trim and flatten the mesh along the four edges of each panel.

  • This ensures better adhesion, reduces the risk of gaps, and improves bonding with the adhesive.

Note: Skipping this step can lead to uneven attachment or panel bulging, especially in large or thin panels.

4. Full Adhesive Coverage

  • Always aim for full adhesive coverage (≥90%) across the back of the panel.

  • Full coverage prevents hollow spots, adhesive gaps, or surface bulging (“bubble effect”).

  • Use the recommended adhesive (two-component epoxy resin or tile adhesive) and apply it evenly with a trowel.

Note: If the adhesive is not applied fully, it can easily lead to bulging or uneven surfaces over time. In fact, during the renovation of the WIFi Ceramics showroom, similar bulging issues occurred due to insufficient adhesive coverage, as shown in the image below.

5. Secure Large or Elevated Panels

  • For large panels or panels installed at high positions, additional mechanical fixation may be necessary.

  • Use fasteners or a nail gun along the upper portion of the panel to prevent slippage until the adhesive fully cures.

  • Avoid placing fasteners in the middle or lower sections to prevent hollow spots or panel deformation.

6. Scientific Curing and Maintenance

Proper curing ensures the panel achieves full strength and durability:

  • Allow adhesives and grout to cure for at least 7–10 days before exposure to water, heavy contact, or cleaning.

  • Protect the installation from rain, excessive moisture, or construction debris during the curing period.

  • Monitor panels for early signs of lifting or hollow spots, and address any issues promptly.

Tip: Scientific curing not only improves adhesion but also prevents long-term deformation or surface defects.

Conclusion

Following these core principles—solid substrate, pre-arrangement, mesh preparation, full adhesive coverage, mechanical support for large panels, and proper curing—ensures that Flexible Stone installations are durable, visually appealing, and free of common issues such as hollow spots or surface bulging.
